Blog for a Job
A reader recently emailed me showcasing how successful a blog post has been for him in landing a job:
"I've had 15 really cool companies from all over North America contact me, almost 800 reads on the blog post and almost 300 reads on my resume; all in 3 days."

This is INCREDIBLY effective. On the advice of this post, I re-worked my website to represent my professional self. On my home page, I described myself in accurate and succinct terms. On my blog page, I wrote short but good posts that reflected my talents and whatever career-related tasks I'd performed that day. Things like compiling and installing a neato freeware tool or adding a wireless network card to a computer.
Then in my cover letter, I encouraged prospective employers to visit my website -- which is mostly designed and coded by me. This had the effect of being an extended, albeit informal, cover letter.
This leaves me thinking that when employers have to choose between 100 resumes that all look alike, this is one way of making yourself stand out, especially in the IT profession.
This is the one way I've marketed myself where I did not feel sleazy about it. Setting up servers and hosting websites has always been part of my job, so it was the perfect medium for showing off my abilities.
